Tackling Reading Programme - Ten-Week Programme
Northampton Saints is proud to embrace the values of rugby through our brand new ten-week reading programme, Tackling Reading, designed to create both rugby and reading champions within your school.
This immersive and enjoyable programme covers the six core values of rugby, fostering positive discussions, idea sharing, and information gathering. Each session will explore students' reading journeys while developing key reading skills, including our Champion approach to looking, clue-finding, and thinking questions in relation to rugby-themed texts.
Programme Overview:
- Duration: The programme spans ten weeks, with each class receiving a total of 10 hours of instruction. Each week includes one hour of theory delivered by our Foundation education staff, incorporating values links throughout the reading activities.
- Target Audience: This programme is suitable for Key Stage 2 students, with all sessions conducted within your school.

- The Power of Reading: How students can inspire others.
- Champion Levels: Developing skills in looking, clue-finding, and thinking questions.
- Key Skills: Enhancing abilities in information retrieval, text marking, inference, group discussions, and making predictions.
- Types and Purposes of Reading: Exploring various reading contexts.
- Group Reading: Weekly readings from our selected book, Combat Zone by Tom Palmer.
- Rugby Values: Emphasizing Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship, and Understanding.
- Celebrating Achievements: Recognizing the group's reading accomplishments.
- Inspiring Future Aspirations: Encouraging dreams of becoming a rugby player or a passionate reader.
