‘Our history, their future’ at the forefront as Foundation rebrands alongside Northampton Saints

Northampton Saints Foundation is delighted to launch its new brand identity alongside the Gallagher Premiership champions.

In 1880, Northampton Saints Rugby Football Club was formed when Reverend Samuel Wathen Wigg identified rugby as a way to channel the energies of some of the county’s more troubled youngsters, from St James’ Church, just across the road from cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens – the current home of the Club and Foundation. This heritage remains the inspiration of the Foundation’s vital work.

Today, Northampton Saints Foundation continue his legacy. We use the power of sport and values of rugby to bring a lasting change to young people and their community through our education and social inclusion programmes, and aim to inspire everyone on those programmes to achieve great things.

The work of the Foundation’s dedicated Heritage Department played a vital role in the process for the new Club crest. Through careful research of the archives, the Club was able to pinpoint the original emblem seen on a Saints shirt shortly after the team was formed back in the 1880s, which provides the inspiration for the new design. The Foundation’s research also was crucial in identifying when and how the previous crest was designed, proving its inception in the 1950s via studying the Club committee’s meeting minutes from the time.

Foundation Managing Director, Catherine Deans, is delighted with the Club and Charity’s new visual identity and the story behind it.

“It is very fitting that the new crest encapsulates the rich history of our great Club,” she said. “The Foundation is fully aligned with the origin of the new crest and what it represents.

“We are committed to our ethos of ‘our history, their future’ – and the new crest fits naturally for the Foundation in recognising the past whilst continuing to move forward. This is something we always aim to instil in our young people as we work to give everyone the chance of a positive future.”

The Foundation’s core colour remains in situ with the Charity’s new crest, its unmistakeable red front and centre.

Deans added: “Our red looks fantastic within the new crest design, and all our staff are proud and excited to represent both the Club and Foundation whilst we do our work creating positive futures for some of the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and challenged young people in Northamptonshire and beyond.

“It feels appropriate to represent the past and the inspiration for the Foundation as we continue to grow and move forward.”
